Why do teachers assign homework?

Susan Baker - of the International TESOL College - believes that completing teacher-assigned homework in ESL classes can be beneficial in three ways:  

Maximizing Speaking Time: Since adults often have busy schedules, assigning homework allows them to practice and reinforce language skills outside of class. Completing exercises at home enables them to focus more on speaking during class periods.          

Review and Reinforcement: Homework provides an opportunity for learners to review and consolidate the material covered in class. It reinforces vocabulary, grammar, and language concepts, helping learners retain what they’ve learned. 

Empowerment: By taking responsibility for their own learning process, students may feel empowered. Homework encourages self-directed study and motivates learners to engage actively with the language. Remember that the key is to assign homework judiciously, when necessary and relevant to the lesson objectives.
